About Heerenveen

Heerenveen is a municipality in the Dutch province of Friesland. The municipality of Heerenveen has sixteen official villages, more than 50,000 inhabitants who for the most part live in the main town of Heerenveen. The center of Heerenveen in origin and built in the 16th century and is therefore the oldest district of Heerenveen.

Heerenveen is the oldest peat canal village in the Netherlands. The site was established in 1551 at the intersection of the Heeresloot (officially, Frisian: Hearresleat, formerly: Heerensloot) and the Schoterlandse Compagnonsvaart. Here was also the Heereweg, the connecting road Zwolle-Leeuwarden.

What do you think about when you think about Heerenveen? Sport probably comes first to you. By skating, football and gymnastics, the term Sportstad is not that crazy because Heerenveen is a Golden Slice! A sports municipality, with sc Heerenveen, Sportstad and Thialf, where famous athletes get many medals. In addition, Heerenveen is dynamic and enterprising. Think of the establishment of the dairy giants on the business park.

You do not have to be bored for a moment in Heerenveen. Go to one of the skating competitions in the Thialf or go skating on the most famous ice rink in the Netherlands. You can swim and fish in De Heide recreation area. Do you prefer to shop? Live out in the center, or visit the market on Wednesdays and Saturdays!
