About Curaçao (CW)

Willemstad is the capital of Curaçao and is located on the southwest coast of the island. The city is adjacent to the natural harbor Schottegat. The famous St. Anna Bay separates the old center of Willemstad into two parts with the Punda district on the east side and the Otrabanda district on the west side. The two neighborhoods are connected by the famous Queen Emma Bridge, also known as the Pontjes Bridge.

In the year 1635 the assignment was given to build the famous Fort Amsterdam. This fort was built with the aim of defending the natural harbor. The port could be perfectly defended by Fort Amsterdam. Gradually more and more houses and residential areas on the island were built, more and more people wanted to live on the island and especially in Willemstad. This created several residential areas on the other side of the bay. As the centuries passed, the city expanded further and further. This was partly due to the arrival of the oil industry. All in all, this has led to a beautiful historic city with its own culture and different nationalities. This typical port city is one of the richest cities in the world when it comes to culture and diversity. A nickname that the city often receives is ” the Amsterdam of the Western Hemisphere ”. This is due to the Dutch architecture and colored canal houses that can be found on the beautiful skyline of Willemstad. The face of these Caribbean houses in bright colors will immediately give you a perfect holiday feeling when you arrive on the island.
